“Paint The Paddle”

The Whitewater Valley Public Library District has announced their First Annual “Paint the Paddle” contest.

Each year in June, the local community hosts the “Canoefest.”  This year the library is sponsoring the contest for painted paddles, which has three divisions, Adult, Teens and Kids which are each split into two categories of Artistic Paddle and Novelty Paddle.  Also three prizes will be given in each division.

Paddles may be purchased for $15.00 each at the Brookville Library and the Laurel Library at any time during open hours of each location.  Entry forms are attached to the paddles.  All paddles need to be returned to the Brookville Library by 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.

Also all paddles must be completely finished by the time they are turned in.  All paint and glue must be dry and all objects must be securely fastened to the paddles in the novelty category.

Each paddle must have its official entry form attached to it and must be filled out completely for consideration.  Be careful to choose your age group and category as this information is vital to placement in the contest.

All paddles turned in for judging become the property of the Whitewater Valley Public Library Art Committee and will be entered in the Canoefest Silent Auction, which is held from noon to 5 p.m. on June 28th.  Beginning minimum bids for any paddle in the silent auction is $5.00 and all sold paddles must be claimed no later than 6 p.m. on June 28th.

After the silent auction is concluded, the Art Committee will be using the funds for restoration of their artwork and to purchase new paintings for the two libraries.

If you have any questions or would like to participate, please contact Melody Gault at (765) 647-4031 or you may email her at mgault@wvcl.org.

If you mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for one minute, let cool slightly and apply the mixture to your hands it will give a soothing relief to arthritis pain.

New Meeting Space

It seems that we are going to have to find a new space to have our monthly business meetings from now on.  In a recent meeting with the director of the Oakland City University, it was revealed that a monthly sum of $250.00 is wanted for the room we have been using for our meetings.

An alternate room was proposed by Dr. Collins for a $25.00 a month fee; however, even this has been deemed to be too small for us to meet in and a new location is being sought.

For the interim, we will be meeting at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner of 15th Street and Lincoln Avenue for the May business meeting.  The May business meeting will be on May 19th due to the normal fourth Monday falling on Memorial Day this year.  We may possibly be there for the June meeting as well.

At present there are no plans on moving the gallery space to another location, though some are being explored by members of the board.

Percentage Increase

Due to the change in directors at the Oakland City University, it has been decided by the director that they now want 10% of everything we sell in the gallery.

As a result, the board of the Lawrence County Art Association has announced that the normal 10% that the association take from art work sold will have to be increased to 20% or perhaps even 25% in order to pay the university its share and to maintain the gallery space that we have available to us.

May Birthdays

Birthdays for this month are…

Brenda Doering, Tonie Kedzierski, Mary Ann Koontz, Elizabeth Little and Kathy Sapp

Let’s give everyone a shout and some well wishes for their birthdays!

And remember, you are only as old as your children tell other people behind your back.

Comments & Concerns

Let’s all give a big round of thanks to Beverly and Mary Jo for providing those tasty refreshments for the April business meeting, which had about 30 members in attendance.

At the May business meeting we will get to sample some of Jodi’s goodies, as she will be taking her turn as the refreshment provider.

Chelsa Klump, the young art student who won our scholarship for Bedford North Lawrence, will be our guest speaker for the May business meeting on Monday May 19th.  Anyone interested in meeting her and viewing some of her art work should plan on attending the next meeting.

We all want to wish Sandra Abraham a speedy recovery on her recent illness and stay in the hospital.  She says she is feeling better and her ability to talk is much stronger than it was before.

April’s meeting brought about some new changes to the organization.  Through a unanimous vote we are now purchasing a new set of standards that were pictured in last month’s newsletter.

A vote was also taken whether to keep our webpage in operation or not.  Through another unanimous vote, we have decided to keep the webpage in operation and to continue to pay the $129.00 for a yearly fee.

The standards that were ordered from last month’s meeting have arrived and are now stored in the gallery.  At the present time, a team of members is looking into buying or creating covers for these new standards.

Mary Jo sold a painting and several of her cards at the Medical Center show last April.  Good for you and let’s hope you sell some more later on.

Rowena has volunteered to pen any new grant proposals that the Art Association might want to apply for in the future.  She has written many grants before and has been on several committees that review grants.  This lady knows her stuff.

Mary Jo would like all of the members to write a short biography on themselves to be turned in to her.  These biographies will be used for future shows that members are included in.  You can give these biographies to Mary Jo, Beverly or you can mail them to the post office box or email it to the group’s address, lawrencecountyart@yahoo.com.

Everyone give a big welcome to new member Angela Timan.  Angie is an instructor of Family & Consumer Sciences at the North Lawrence Career Center and is the mother of two daughters who are budding artists themselves.

We have moved $1,000.00 from the checking account and into our CD, which came due this month.  Our treasurer advises that we will accumulate more interest on our funds in the CD rather in the checking account.

If anyone has any suggestions about when and/or where to have a “Paint Out,” please contact Isabella at isaenator@gmail.com or call 675-0166.

Ella Rose and Colleen have both sold a painting each at Spring Mill this past month.  This was the first time Colleen has sold a painting there.  Congratulations on a job well done to both of these talented artists!

We desperately need to find a replacement for Jodi Estell as the chairperson of the Dunn Hospital Committee.  Jodi is willing to help her replacement, but cannot continue these duties.  If there is anyone interested please contact Todd or Jodi for details.

A new committee was formed at the April meeting, the History Festival Committee.  This committee will be exploring the possibility of having a booth at the 2009 Lawrence County History Festival.  If anyone is interested in this project please contact Stephen.

A member of the Art Association, who wishes to remain anonymous, has challenged the members to raise $225.00 for an unknown project.  These funds will be matched by the same anonymous member when they have been raised.  For further information about this redundant project, call Todd Price at 275-8617.

If anyone is interested in setting up at the Farmer’s Market to sell your artwork please contact Mary Jo.  Please remember the Farmer’s Market operates on Saturdays from 6am until Noon.

The Lawrence County Art Association has recently been given an award for community contributions and for continued membership by the Dunn Hospital and the Bedford Chamber of Commerce.  Kudos for us!

If you have anything to be added to the newsletter, please call Stephen at (812) 276-8597 or email at stgbowman@yahoo.com.  Remember the deadline for the newsletter is 2pm on the second Friday of the month.

It has become apparent that the Art Association may have to raise the yearly dues from $15 to $20 per year beginning in 2009.  This increase in fees may be required to combat the operating costs of our group.  A formal vote will be taken later in the year.

Jeanne Iler from the Sycamore Land Trust wanted to remind everyone about the June 10th deadline for the juried show to celebrate the beautiful Indiana landscape.

Lastly, we want to wish all the mothers, aunts, grandmothers and maybe even a great-grandmother a very happy Mother’s Day this year!.
